Your Mac already has the Tibetan keyboard. You only switch it on.
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen, then System Settings.
In the list on the left, scroll down and click Keyboard.
Under Text Input, next to Input Sources, click Edit.
Click the + button at the bottom left. Type Tibetan in the search box, choose Tibetan – Wylie, then click Add.
In the same window, switch on Show Input menu in menu bar, then click Done.
Press Control and Space together, or the globe key. You can also click the keyboard menu at the top right of the screen and choose Tibetan – Wylie.
How stacks work: letters typed one after another join into a stack (སྐ is S K). Press A to keep the next letter from stacking: དལ is D A L. Each letter appears when you press the next key.
Windows 10 and 11 already have the Tibetan keyboard and the Tibetan font Microsoft Himalaya. You only switch them on.
Click the Start button, then Settings. Or press the Windows key and I together.
Click Time & language, then Language & region.

Press the Windows key and Space together and choose Tibetan. You can also click ENG at the bottom right of the screen.

Already know Wylie? Keyman turns Wylie spelling into Tibetan, on Mac and Windows. It needs a download.
Keyman is free. Download it from keyman.com and install it like any other program.
Download KeymanChoose Tibetan EWTS in the keyboard menu: on Windows with the Windows key and Space, on a Mac with Control and Space.
Monlam Bodyig is a free Tibetan keyboard by Monlam for Mac and Windows. Every Tibetan letter has its own key. It needs a download.
Open Monlam's download page and choose the file for your computer, Windows or Mac. Download Monlam only from this page: copies on other websites can be unsafe.
Monlam's download pageOpen the downloaded file and follow the steps. If a Mac says the file cannot be opened, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway.
On Windows, installing adds it to your keyboards. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Keyboard. Next to Input Sources, click Edit, then the + button. Find Monlam (it can be under Others) and click Add.

On an older computer, download a free Tibetan font under “Tibetan fonts for Word and other programs” on this page.
That is how stacking works: letters typed one after another join together, and A keeps them apart. The practice page shows you every key to press.
On a Mac, Tibetan – Wylie. On Windows, Tibetan (PRC) – Updated. If you already know Wylie, Keyman Tibetan EWTS works on both. Then choose the same keyboard in the Keyboard menu on the practice page.
Apple Wylie and Keyman EWTS spell the letters the same way, but some symbol keys are different. This site accepts Tibetan typed with any Tibetan keyboard.

What Tibetan Type Lab keeps, why, and how you stay in control. In plain English.
Tibetan Type Lab is a free website for learning to type Tibetan and part of Tibetan Events. It is run by the volunteer team of Tibetan Events Worldwide (“we”), with team members in Switzerland and the United States, for learners, schools and families everywhere in the world. It is not a registered organisation or company. You can reach us at info@tibetanevents.com.
We follow the privacy laws that apply to our users, including the Swiss Data Protection Act, the EU and UK GDPR and US state laws such as the California CCPA. We keep as little as possible, never sell data and never use advertising or tracking.
You can use the whole course without signing up. Your lessons, speed, streak, settings and chosen keyboard are saved only in your own browser on your computer. They are not sent to us.
When you finish a practice session, your browser sends us:
We use this only to count how many people are learning and how many finish the course. It contains no name, no email and no other personal details.
When you finish all lessons, you can ask for a certificate. For this we ask for:
We also keep the certificate number, the date you finished, your best speed and your average accuracy.
Why: to create your certificate and to confirm that a certificate number is real.
Legal basis: your consent, which you give with the tick box in the form. You can withdraw it at any time.
You can correct your details yourself with Edit my details in the certificate window, or ask us to change or delete them.
In the certificate form there is a separate, optional tick box: “Tibetan Events may show my name, country and result on Instagram.” Only if you tick it may we post your course card (name, country, best speed, accuracy and certificate number) on our Instagram account @tibetanevents. Your date of birth is never shown. You can withdraw this permission at any time by writing to us, and we will remove the post.
If you join a class with a class code from your teacher, we keep:
Who sees it: only the teacher of your class. Other pupils see only the total number of syllables the class typed, never names or results. A certificate of a pupil in a class also shows the school and teacher name.
Why: so your teacher can follow and help your learning. The school or teacher decides to use classes and is responsible for telling pupils and parents.
Deleting: you can leave the class at any time on the Classroom page; this deletes your name and class practice. Your teacher can also remove you, and everything is deleted when the class is deleted. For teachers we keep their name, school, email, when they first opened the teacher area, and the texts and homework they add. Teachers can allow Tibetan Events to share a text for everyone; it is then published with the school’s name.
Class registration: when a school registers a class, we keep the school name, teacher’s name, class name and email to set up the class and to email the teacher key and class code. We use the email only for this and for messages about the class. The registration itself is deleted when the teacher first signs in, or when we decline it; the teacher’s details are deleted when the teacher is removed. A class requested in the teacher area uses the teacher’s saved name, school and email. When a teacher puts several classes under one key, we keep one teacher entry and delete the others. When a teacher asks for a new key, we keep the name, email, class code (and school) they type until we have answered. The school and teacher name printed on a pupil’s certificate stay with that certificate, also after the pupil leaves the class or the teacher is removed.
To stop people guessing class codes or flooding our forms, we briefly keep a scrambled form of the internet address of wrong code attempts, class registrations, lost-key requests and texts sent for the library (deleted after one day).
When you send a story or article with Add a text, we keep the title, the text, the author, your name, your email and the date. Why: so Tibetan Events can read the text, decide whether to add it to the library and reply to you. Your email is required: we use it only to reply to you and to limit how many texts one person sends (two a day). It is never shown on the website. If we add your text, its title, author and your name (as “Added by”) are shown in the library and in Text credits. Texts we decline are deleted after 30 days.
The result cards and course cards are made in your own browser. Nothing is sent to us when you make or download a card. If you choose to share a card on Instagram, WhatsApp or another app, that app’s own privacy rules apply.
